'I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think.' Rumi
I am an experienced professional classical soprano, teacher and choir director. I trained at the Royal College of Music in London.
Singing and teaching really has been my life’s work.
I was not from a musical family and discovered my voice at age 11 or thereabouts. As a girl guide I had to go to church once a month, the church happened to be across the road from my home.
I’d never visited before as I wasn’t from a religious background. There was a small village choir singing. I was mesmerised and decided to sneak out of the house the following Sunday and two or three more after that, singing along from the pews.
One Sunday a kindly grey haired lady chorister sought me out and declared, “You have a lovely voice dear, I have a gift for you.”
She presented me with a hymn book wrapped in crumpled brown paper, and said, “you shouldn’t be sitting here, come and sing with us.”
This really was the beginning of my life’s journey in music. Singing really is for every one, young or old.
In addition to my long and varied career as a singer in the fields of opera, oratorio, and consort singing, I also worked as a professional church chorister in many notable London churches, including the London Oratory.
I sang there for many years and subsequently married the Director of Music John Hoban.
Well, I still perform as a soprano soloist. I teach singing, piano and music theory from my home here in Winchcombe Gloucestershire and teach in a number of local schools.
From my beginnings singing in a small church choir, I have been fortunate to be able to direct a number of choirs, including the Choir of St Peter’s Winchcombe from 2018 to August 2024. I am currently the director of The Kenelm Singers, a newly formed chamber choir based in Winchcombe with many of our members living here and in the surrounding villages.
The Kenelm Singers is an SATB chamber choir with an eclectic repertoire. Inspiring and challenging choral repertoire that is well sung is at the heart of our endeavours, alongside offering concerts and outreach for our community here and further afield. We are experienced in delivering music for weddings and funerals. We are always on the lookout for new experienced choral singers to join us.
I spend much of my time helping children and adults to express themselves through the art of song and choral singing.
